About the Committee
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly. This committee deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community and seeks out solutions to the challenges in the international security regime.
The utilisation of nuclear usage in and aftermath of World War II had an undeniably significant impact and left an indelible mark on history. International attempts to control the development of nuclear technology quickly stalled, leading to a race between the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain and France to develop their own nuclear weapons. These countries adopted a policy of nuclear deterrence, using the threat of massive retaliation to prevent a nuclear attack by an enemy.
H-DISEC simulates the very first years of the United Nations when the world was still reeling from the aftermath of the Second World War. In this historical format, delegates are transported back to the late 1940s and early 1950s, a period marked by the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the beginning of the nuclear arms race, and the dawn of the Cold War.
