About the Committee

The International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO is an international body that was established to provide guidance on ethical and legal issues raised by research in the area of medicine, biological sciences and associated technologies, and to improve and reinforce knowledge in ethics.

Since its creation in 1993 the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) has developed important declarations in the field of bioethics shaping the worldwide debate with a focus on goals that are important for all UNESCO Member States. The IBC members are independent experts representing different regions, professions as well as different cultures of the currently 195 UNESCO member states.

Human machine integration and neural implants represent a great advancement at the intersection of technology and biology, offering the potential to enhance human capabilities and improve quality of life. As these technologies evolve, they open new possibilities for treating medical conditions, expanding the limits of human performance and many more. At the same time, they bring important ethical and scientific questions about how far we should go in altering the human body and mind, and what it means to be human. Balancing innovation with careful oversight is essential to ensure these developments benefit society while respecting individual rights and human values.
