About the Committee
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the UN’s agency dedicated to sexual and reproductive health, population dynamics, and sustainable development. Established in 1969, UNFPA aims to promote universal access to reproductive health services, reduce maternal and infant mortality, support family planning, and empower women and young people to make informed choices about their futures. UNFPA works in more than 150 countries with the mission of ensuring every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person can fulfil their potential.
Overpopulation poses complex and urgent challanges that are closely linked to UNFPA’s mission. Rapid demographic growth increases pressure on national systems that provide healthcare , education, housing, employment and social services. It also threatens the sustainability of natural resources , contributing to poverty, inequality and environmental challanges. Overpopulation can restrict access to essential heatlhcare services, intensify maternal and child health risks and complicate efforts to ensure universal healthcare coverage.
In this committee , delegates will be expected to facilitate dialogue on strategies to address the global implications of overpopulation with a focus on sustainable development and public health. It is encouraged that delegates will focus on finding solutions to the complications caused by the situation while also trying to eliminate the causes of rapid population growth.
